Custom Regulations

Professional video cameras require a permit from the Government Communication Affairs Office. While small, modern consumer camcorders typically aren’t subject to scrutiny, larger or older models may attract attention. If needed, we can assist in securing the necessary permit.

Visitors can bring in an unlimited amount of foreign currency, but amounts exceeding 3,000 USD (or equivalent) must be declared. To export more than 3,000 USD, the customs declaration must be presented. Travelers are limited to carrying no more than 200 birr when entering or leaving Ethiopia.

Duty-free allowances include:

  • 200 cigarettes, 100 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco;
  • 2 liters of alcohol;
  • 0.5 liters of perfume.

Visitors may export goods purchased in Ethiopia up to a value of 500 birr. For the export of skins, hides, or antique artifacts (such as crosses, paintings, or bibles), an export certificate is required.
